Gluten Free San Diego

I have lots of friends that eat Gluten Free foods just because they have allergies or they just lack the enzyme to break down the chemical in Gluten. Fortunately, I don’t have that problem, but if I did, I would want to know where to find good gluten free restaurants.  Last week, I got invited to Sammy’s Woodfire Pizza for a sampling of their gluten free menu. To my surprise the food was delicious and the gluten free crust was even better (in my opinion) than the regular pizza crust they offered. It was more of a cracker textured crust than the normal doughy crust. I had the Organic Arugula and Pear Pizza and the hummus. Eating gluten free doesn’t mean you can’t eat good stuff anymore.

The Turf Supper Club – Bathroom Blogfest entry

This year, I decided to participate in the annual Bathroom Blogfest. This year the theme is “Still Stuck in the 60’s”. Well I found a place that is still stuck in the 60’s but I have to say it was a gosh darn clean, well-stocked bathroom. My friend Suzanne and I decided to have dinner at the Turf Supper Club in Golden Hill. Here you are responsible for cooking your own food on their not very modern grill. It is pretty entertaining when you burn your hamburger bun and under-cook your veggie kabob. I am not very patient when it comes to cooking my own food on a grill. I actually have no patience at all but that is a different story. This post isn’t about the food,  it is about the bathroom. The women’s bathroom was a very interesting shade of Pepto-Bismol Pink. The decor was definitely stuck in the 60’s or even the 50’s. The beauty of San Diego is that there are still a few establishments that stay to their historical roots, I can honestly say this is one of them.

Bathrooms really do make or break a restaurant or a bar. I have been in restrooms that are overflowing with paper towels, have no toilet paper left or just looks like it hasn’t been cared for a in a week. Not a good sign. It is a sign that the establishment does not care about their brand.  Maintaining your bathroom is really essential, it is part of an overall service experience. The Turf Supper Club definitely has a brand and the brand is retro. The restaurant has old Budweiser memorabilia and old horse paintings decorating their dining area. The bathrooms are old and the decor isn’t the most ideal to most but it fits with the theme. I  definitely will be worried if this bathroom decor catches on again, but I have accepted the plastic flowers and gaudy copper hangings. The bathrooms wouldn’t be the same in the Turf Supper Club without them.

Dia de los Muertos at Back from Tomboctou

Yesterday, I took an Altar making workshop at the shop called Back from Tomboctou with my friend Sukhjit. It was a crafty day for both of us.  I was excited to find out about these workshops. I have been a collector of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) ofrendas for years,  always picking up a couple from my travels to Mexico. To my surprise Back from Tomboctou has been on Adams Avenue for over 20 years. The owners Claudio and Mirabel have been selling their folk art treasures for over 30 years.

This little shop is filled with mostly Mexican folk art but I did see some African and Asian pieces as well. What I did learn from this workshop was what the certain elements of a Dia de los Muertos altar meant and what you should include to honor your loved one. When you make an altar, you are to include food (plastic or pictures), liquor (little fake bottles), dried marigold leaves, incense, a picture of your loved one, candles and a tiny vial of water. There are meanings for the color of candle you use, the food you include, why you use incense etc…Additional elements include sugar skulls (calveras), skeletons and fun elements like sparkles and glitter.

Ofrendas

I have always been a collector of Dia de los Muertos items because of the art aspect, but learning more about the cultural aspect was a highlight of the afternoon. I look forward to the Old Town festivities and possibly some of the Dia de Muertos Festivals going on the very end of October and the first week of November.

Java Mama Cafe’

A photo of a cup of coffee.
Image via Wikipedia

I normally don’t go to Scripps Ranch but today I went to Java Mama Cafe’ to meet up with some fellow bloggers. Java Mama is a a gem of a coffee shop. I wish they had a concept like this when my kids were younger. A natural-toned, quiet environment coffee shop/kids play area. They even have a staff member that supervises while your kids play in a confined area. While they are playing, you can sit at one of their tables and sip on a coffee, have a muffin and relax or do some work (no bright primary colors that make you go crazy). Another great thing about this place is that it is big and airy. They also offer classes for children and classes to help get through the woes of parenthood. I have to say I would be a regular if this was open 5 years ago.

Cafe 21- Neighborhood eats

Strawberry Salad

Café 21 located on Adams Avenue in the San Diego neighborhood of Normal Heights is a culinary treasure. This quaint family-owned restaurant makes everything from scratch and the food is presented like you were eating in a fancy restaurant but in a diner-style atmosphere. This place is cozy enough for a  date for two yet spacious enough for a dinner party of 8.  The food served there is a fusion of Mediterranean, European and gourmet American. I enjoyed everything that was ordered. We had the Apricot Cristo Crepes, Strawberry Salad and Meat Kabob Platter. The Meat Kabob platter alone consisted of Lamb chops, turkey-beef kabobs, chicken skewers, with cranberry cinnamon rice pilaf, some pickled vegetables, hummus and pita bread and a side of this divine pomegranate cherry red wine sauce easily fed our table of 4 and we ordered the portion that feeds 2.

Our waiter Jason was a delight and was pretty humorous. He had explained the origin of the café and how the catering business morphed into a restaurant (They still do catering). I had invited a few close friends – Sukhjit, Richie, Butch, Jen. We stayed a few hours chatting and eating, and we did not at all feel rushed.  In retrospect, the whole evening was filled with interesting conversation and fun. Lively music filled the café as the night drew to a close. This place also serves a breakfast and lunch, we got to browse the menu and were all impressed by the variety offered. The menu item that struck us the most unique was the Pound Cake Fries served with the housemade chocolate strawberry dip on the Breakfast menu. Of course, a brunch date is up for planning in our near future.  Thanks Café 21 for your hospitality that night.

Cafe 21 is located on 2736 Adams Ave., their phone number is (619) 640-2121.

Housemade Sangria

*Our housemade Sangrias was not on the house but the food was.

Cooking at Cups

When you think of Cups La Jolla, you think cupcakes. Right? Well, now you can think cooking classes, kids night out, food instruction, gift making. Cool, huh? Did you know that behind the doors of their kitchen is a secret room with a demonstration kitchen?  The perfect setup for a date night, group outing, or a solo “me” time get-away.  I had the chance to take a class last weekend. The class I took was the “Chino Latino Fusion Cuisine” with Chef Isabel Cruz noted for her San Diego restaurants, Cantina, Barrio Star and the Coffee Cup. I learned a few “secrets” from this talented chef. I learned how  to remove the skins off Jalapeños (after burning them sweat them off by placing them in a bowl and covering them in saran wrap and never touch the peppers with your bare hands- one touch to the eye and ow-wee), the key to fast garlic preparation- buy garlic bulbs already peeled and vacuum sealed,  and to cover the Sugar/Water while on the stove (speeds up the caramelization process but don’t forget it’s there or you’ll get burnt sugar).

Blackened Corn on the Cob

The three-hour instruction/hands-on class included recipes from Isabel’s cookbook and restaurants. We collectively made a four course meal with very simple and fresh ingredients.  We even got to sample Cups’ own Dulce de Leche Cupcakes. It was an overall wonderful experience. I definitely will be back.

Student doing hands-on

Sample of Classes to come:

October 3, 10, 17, 24Farm-To-Table: You will actually walk to the La Jolla Farmer’s Market and go back to the kitchen to learn how to prepare dishes using fresh fruits and vegetables you just picked up.

October 8, 22Parents Night Off -Cupcakes and a movie: Great idea! Leave your 5-9 year old and take off for a couple of hours (out to dinner, walk on the beach), come back and your kids will have decorated some cupcakes, met some new friends and watched a movie.

October 9- Burger Bromance: A class taught by former Executive chef of Roseville. Burger Secrets and techniques. Note on the description ” *This class is not exclusively for men.”

*Disclosure: I got to take the Chino Latino Class courtesy of Cups but was not required to write a post.

Unconditional Surrender

How was not I aware of this 25 ft. sculpture? This sculpture by J. Seward Johnson is aptly named Unconditional Surrender, I guess it is on loan till today (glad I saw it yesterday). I have passed by the USS Midway numerous times. I guess I wasn’t looking hard enough.

San Diego Food Truck Movement

In light of my addiction to Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race“,  I want to give the lowdown on the local San Diego Food Truck Movement. I find it fascinating that food trucks can provide gourmet food and drinks and pop up anywhere in San Diego on a moments notice. Sometimes the trucks are hard to find. The way I find out about whereabouts are through my twitter list and through the Facebook page about San Diego Food Trucks.  Love to hear from you about your food truck recommendations, what your favorite choices are and why?

Here are my favorites (No particular order of yum):

Tabe BBQ – Tabe has a stationary kitchen location on Murphy Canyon Rd. which it makes is very convenient to have one of their delicious creations without having to search out their food truck whereabouts. Also, another thing that makes Tabe unique is their Tabe Tuesday event – a live DJ and casual seating makes evening dining fun.

Joes on the Nose– Also known as La Naranja, this bright orange truck is sure to make the perfect coffee/tea concoction for you. My favorite is the Cheater Five. They are regulars at the Little Italy Mercado and the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market.

MIHO Gastrotruck: The burgers were very gourmet. The beef is grass fed which makes a huge difference in the taste. I look forward to having other menu items from their truck in the future. I hear they serve Poutine on occasion (a curiosity of mine).

Other Food Trucks I have yet to try:

KalbiQ

San Diego Sweet Truck

Copper Chimney

Bareback Grill’s Kiwi Coach (Link is the Restaurant site)

This weekend only-Comic Con takes over San Diego

I am excited for Comic Con. The one-time of year San Diego gets a boost in tourism and downtown is busting at it’s gills. Take the trolley, if you decide to head downtown. The cost is a fraction of the headache of the traffic and the dollars you will spend for the parking. Plus, you get to see the neat Klingon trolley signs, so study up on your Klingon or you might get lost. There are also a few restaurants that got bought out for the weekend. Head over to the Hard Rock Hotel’s Mary Jane Cafe and you’ll find that Syfy took it over and turned it into Cafe’ Diem. Or Ciro’s Pizza and you’ll find that Cartoon Network took it over and made it into their own. Prepare to take lots of cash if you do go to these restaurants though, I am sure they need to recoup their sponsor dollars somehow. People watching is a must. Prepare to seen grown men and women live out their childhood fantasies dressed up in Superhero, Star wars and Iconic figures. Fun, fun times this weekend.

Excited for Viva la Revolucion

Image- thegiant.org

For art to be muraled around San Diego and incorporated into an exhibit is genius. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s (MCASD) new exhibit Viva la Revolucion: A dialogue with the Urban Landscape is opening up on Saturday night and I can’t wait to see the pieces that complement the public art already scattered throughout San Diego.  It is like a little treasure hunt around San Diego. I have already seen the space invader mural on the abandoned Art Center downtown done by Invader (how appropriate). Sezio, a non-profit artist organization did a nice blog post on the other murals around San Diego. I have yet to see the Shepard Fairey Mural between University and Washington on 5th. Shepard Fairey is known for the famous Obama Poster “Yes We Did” and the “Obey” art. I have a soft spot for good graffiti art. I am sure there will be more art revealed but for now the only artist I know other than Shepard and Invader doing mural work is Os Gemeos.  The opening is this Saturday, July 17th at the Downtown location. It is free to MCASD members (I am a proud member) or $20 for a ticket.
