The Secret San Diego Guide to Being Green

organic fruit and vegetables

I have been on a green kick lately. After watching the movies Food Inc. and Food Beware: The French Organic Revolution, I have become more aware on how the food industry business works, from the different methods of raising a farm animal to the process of delivering food from the factory to the kitchen table. I have also been trying to be conscious on what my household does to reduce our carbon footprint. Because of this, I have been trying to eat less meat and to buy organically when I can. Here is a list of San Diego Resources that has helped me strive to become an eco friendly citizen:

Food Shopping: There are numerous Farmer’s Markets scattered throughout San Diego County, the schedule is here. My favorites are the Little Italy Mercado on Saturdays and the Hillcrest Farmers Market on Sundays. I try to go there when I can, but if I can’t buy my produce at the Farmer’s Market, I try to buy organic at the local supermarket. My favorite markets for food shopping are: Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, Henry’s, Windmill Farms and Trader Joes, I like these stores mostly because they are mostly convenient but I find different qualities in each one. Other good markets include: Bristol Farms, Farmers Outlet, Whole Foods and Jimbos. Also, you can buy produce direct from Specialty Produce (wholesales to restaurants). When shopping, I try to bring my own shopping bags so I don’t have to use those plastic ones. I also try to dispose of jars, cans and packaging that can be recycled in the “Blue” City of San Diego Can.

Restaurants: I have been trying to eat at restaurants that buy locally, use sustainable farms or are certified green. My favorite restaurants that fit these criteria are Terra, Ranchos and Croce’s Restaurant & Jazz Bar.

Terra’s Owner Jeff Rossman is very involved in the community from developing local school gardens to being a voice for the Childhood Obesity Initiative in San Diego. He also maintains his restaurant blog that updates his life as an author, a restaurateur and his visits to local farms.

Besides the Rancho’s Mexican Restaurant (I go to the one in North Park), Ranchos also has a natural food, vegan store. The store is small but after eating a nice meal, it is a great little place to pick up some produce/vegetarian products.

Me and Ingrid Croce

Croce’s Restaurant & Jazz Bar is the only certified Green Restaurant in the Gaslamp. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Ingrid Croce at a local Girls Night Out event. Ingrid was so warm and generous, she made our group feel like a part of her family. She even presented our group with her book Thyme in the Bottle, which tells of her life with Jim Croce to her present day success and sprinkles some delicious sounding recipes in between.

Transportation: If you lack time restraints, think about taking MTS or Coaster for public transportation or take the Amtrak train to your destination. If you have to drive your car try to map out your destinations before you hit the road. This will help save time and gas when driving your vehicle.

Conserving Water: To conserve water at home – I  take 5-minute showers, water my lawn every three days in 5-minute cycles, andwatch my water usage when washing dishes and brushing my teeth (when I am not using the water, I turn it off). Also, I was not aware that a typical car wash uses approx. 500 gallons of water, so I have stopped washing my car at home. I made it a point to take it to a car wash that recycles water. I have also looked into eco friendly alternatives to a car wash.

My "Silver Fox"

I highly recommend CARBONita Detail for their detail service. I got a full-detail on my car that was very dirty inside and out. When they washed my car, CARBONita only used one pint of water. I was able to go on with my typical day because they came to me in the cutest little Smart car. A few hours later, my car looked spotless, the paint had a glassy finish and I was actually proud to drive it again. Another plus, was that the entire line of auto detailing supplies and products that they use are biodegradable and/or VOC Compliant, which is key in preserving the environment.

In conclusion, I know that I won’t ever be completely free from harmful things in my food or in my environment. But I figure as long as I keep learning about making the world a better place, any little improvement I make can’t hurt. Please share any green tips by commenting. I wrote this post for my own reference and in hopes that other San Diegans (or visitors) will find this list helpful as well.

*Disclosure- I paid for all the services I have tried in this post. I went to Croce’s with a group of girls and received a bag with the Thyme in a Bottle cookbook and a couple of Jim Croce cds as a gift.

The Hotel Del Coronado

I moved to San Diego in 1996. Thirteen years without going inside the Hotel Del Coronado. I find this way too long. I finally went to the “Hotel Del” or “The Del” yesterday for the very first time. The first time means going inside and outside the building. I did park in front of it last Summer to pick-up a friend from a photography shoot, but I don’t believe staying in the car and waiting counts. Anyways, Going into “The Del” was like experiencing a piece of history. The wooden structure looks huge on the outside but the interior is quaint and dark on the inside. A huge tree was decorated in the middle of the lobby, the tree had to be about fifty feet tall. Parking was pretty easy. There is a self-parking lot at the hotel and yet it is a bit pricey if you don’t try to get your ticket validated. Cost is $15 for two-hrs and $10 each additional hr. Seems steep, yet the views are breathtaking and easy access to the beach makes it all worth it. The reason I went to “The Del” was because I promised E I would take her to go ice skating. From November to beginning of Jan, they build a temporary ice skating rink near the beach area and with admission (some of the proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of San Diego) E and I got to skate for a couple of hours. E was out there making friends chatting away about her earmuffs. The weather had to be about 60-65 degrees. I ended up taking off my jacket and tying it around my waist. The line was about a 15 min wait but as soon as we paid, everything went smoothly. The ice was pretty hard and smooth when we got there but about an hour on the rink, the ice started melting and one fall meant getting wet. E was drenched from her hour of skating. I lasted about 15 min. and I didn’t fall so I was safe. My ankles aren’t what they used to be, so quitting seemed the best thing to save my feet. I watched E from the sidelines. E is still young and she kept going and going and falling and falling.  Luckily, we had a change of clothes for her in the car (Tip- bring change of clothes). We went to the bathroom and got her dry then went and enjoyed the rest of our afternoon at the hotel. After skating, E and I wandered around the shops. It is a mini-shopping area down the stairs of the main lobby. The items are pretty unique and many are sea themed, a lot of nice high-end merchandise. By wandering through the shops I found out that there is validation available for the self-parking- 3 hrs free parking if you spend $50 (that is what the sign says) or $10 if you buy a hot dog at the Sea Side Grill like E and I did. A foot-long hot dog, a side of pickles and a bag of chips $10,  a glorious view of the ocean and free parking that would of cost me $15 otherwise (Score). The ice skating goes until Jan. 3, but the Del will always be there. One of my New Year’s resolutions- explore San Diego more.

Thread Show and Year-end Recap

Floating Terrariums at Thread

How the year has gone and there are many adventures in San Diego still that need to be taken. I have to admit, my posts haven’t been so often but I have had some great adventures.

THREAD SHOW

I recently went to the Thread Show in San Diego. Thread is a lifestyle, fashion show. A couple sometimes three times a year, Thread puts on a two-day show at a venue where up-and-coming designers go to sell their wares. Most of them will sell at wholesale cost or at a discount as you would see it in a boutique. There are also art installations and fashion shows. It is a fun day to see what is going on in the indie fashion world.

YEAR-END RECAP

So much to explore and to know about in San Diego. Not just the normal Sea World, Zoo, Legoland adventure that the typical tourist knows about. There are shows, events like Thread, meet-ups, trails, lakes, parks and much more to see and do here. I hope to encounter more adventures, have more guest posts, reveal a few deals, and share what is secret in San Diego. Have a great 2010!

Sweetwater Reservoir: The Hidden Treasure of San Diego – Guest Post by Maria Palma

I feel very blessed to have this view during a full moon right before sunset. Caption: Studio747

I’ve lived in San Diego for 17 years and thought that I had seen it all.  When my boyfriend told me he had found a place in Spring Valley by a lake, I thought he must have made a mistake.

Spring Valley has a lake?

When I first moved to the San Diego area I lived in Spring Valley and had never heard of this lake.  Come to find out, it’s the Sweetwater Reservoir that has been here for hundreds of years.  If you’re driving along the newer part of Highway 125, you’ll see it right at the foot of Mt. Miguel.

The Sweetwater Reservoir is considered to be one of San Diego County’s hidden treasures.  There are a few houses that overlook this lake and I’m fortunate to have one of those views.  On the other side of the lake is the Sweetwater Regional Park with campsites available to the public.  If you need a mini-getaway and love the outdoors, I would recommend staying at the park.

The view of the lake is gorgeous at sunset. Caption: Studio747

On most days I love to sit outside and watch the various birds and ducks hanging around the lake.  Even in the middle of November it’s warm with a nice cool breeze.  When there’s a full moon, the light from the moon glistens on the lake.  It’s breathtaking.

San Diego Backdrops

elise0304a

photograph by Suzanne Hansen Photography- Outside of New Children's Museum

Holidays are just around the corner. Are you ready? My favorite photos are behind bright colors and public murals around San Diego. Here are a few of my favorite places:

*Pacific Beach – Around the corner of Garnet and Cass there is a John Lennon Mural with a painted two-dimensional black and white ladder.  The black and white Ladder makes a backdrop.

*Balboa Park, Spanish Village – Colorful backdrops, distressed wood doors and unique adornments give this area a great place to take pics. Also, adventure around the rest of Balboa Park where there are mosaics, sculptures, gardens for your backdrop pleasure.

*Goldfinch St. in Mission Hills – Head towards downtown, you will see a painted mural of flowers and butterflies, very whimsical.

*Downtown – so many colorful backdrops to choose from, I adore East Village with the multi-colored doors and walls. Also near/at the new Children’s Museum.

*Little Italy- Italian influenced wall paintings throughout the area make great pictures and is also a fun stroll and great little restaurants.

Other places:

*Newport Ave. in OB – lots of murals around the areas.

*Inside Restaurants (ask permission first or they might kick you out)

*Artist Painted electric boxes around the city.

Lakes in San Diego

IMG_3594San Diego isn’t known for its lakes, it is known for their beaches and great weather. I am fortunate to live by one of the numerous lakes, so at least once a week I jog or walk Lake Murray. There are a bunch of lakes (The City of San Diego calls them reservoirs) Also, there is also a lake in Santee (nearby town) and a handful in the unincorporated parts of San Diego County.  Here are some pics I took on one of my runs.

Another food post- Secret Restaurant bargains

IMG_3272My quest for a bargain is endless, always looking for a coupon or a deal on the web. Because of the economic times, restaurants are more inclined to offer discounts on their food in-order to turn you into a loyal customer. Lately, I have encountered many buy one get one free entrees and more recently a 50% off coupon at Boston Market on their Family meal (a labor day special). This made feeding a family of 4 for only 12.50. This meal included a whole chicken and a quarter, 4 sides (green beans, mac and cheese, 2 orders of mashed potatoes) & 4 cornbreads.

This Tuesday- 9/8/09, The Burger Lounge (a local green-certified restaurant) is offering a free burger with proof that you are a twitter follower of theirs, I am already a fan of their burgers but this creates buzz in the local twitter community and also gives me reinforcement that the Burger Lounge is awesome.

Also, coming up in San Diego is San Diego Restaurant week (September 13-18). This comes around a couple times a year, where participating local fine dining restaurants are offering a three-course meal for $20, $30, $40. My dining options are wider these few times a year, this year I will plan at least one excursion to a new restaurant. In past restaurant weeks, I have tried fancier places that would be considered a “special occasion” place. I dined at Bertrands at Mr. A’s for $50 out the door- I didn’t have any wine so it would of been more if I ordered a drink (normal cost for my meal would of been well over $80).

Pick-up Stix has had a buy one entree get one free coupon on their site for a while now, this has saved me time and money for getting dinner done.

Lastly, restaurant.com offers discounts at a small cost for the discount. Cost depends if you have a coupon code or not. I have gotten a $25 off of a $35 meal for $3, I know there are $2 codes out there as well. I recently went to the Turf Club in Golden Hill and had a great meal for two $36 including tip + $3 certificate, this would of been a $51 meal otherwise. I have a handful of these certificates to different restaurants, I just need to be aware to use them and to try new restaurants out- so if you buy these certificates be mindful to use them.

If you can search the web or look on the restaurant’s website before you go to that establishment, you will never know if you will find a coupon or encounter any specials they may have.  Happy eating!

Other places to get discounts

  • Soupplantation- join Club Veg and get emailed coupons in your inbox, I got a buy-one-get-one free coupon this weekend and also for my birthday!
  • Pat and Oscars- join Club Breadstick and get offers in your mailbox and when you join you get a coupon for a free bag of their delicious breadsticks.
  • Look in local community magazines, The Reader, City Beat. I have seen some great deals in these resources.
  • If you eat out a lot invest in an Entertainment Book, these can be purchased usually through fundraisers or Costco. There are discount movie coupons and other things as well in these thick books. I keep this book in my car just in-case.

Secret Menus

IMG_2502I have always knew about the secret menu at In-n-Out Burger but who would of knew Jamba Juice, Chipotle, McDonalds, and my favorite Starbucks had secret items for your ordering pleasure. When I think of Jamba Juice I think healthy smoothies…with secret menu items like Gummy Bear and Now and Later, a person with a sweet tooth would be in heaven. I am not so sure about ordering  the secret Jamba Juice drinks Hello Jesus or Penis Shooter (what in the world is in these things?). It would be cool to try one of these concoctions just on a whim but again I think I will stay with the classic Razzmatazz. To experience the details of all the Secret Menus in depth go to this article on examiner.com

Link is for In-n-out, scroll down on the page for all the other restaurants. Leave a comment if you know any San Diego restaurant secret menu items or want to let us know about your experience with any of the secret menu items.

  • Balboa Park offers local residents and military members free admission on Tuesdays to selected museums (rotate every week except for 5th Tuesday).

Whaley House

The Whaley House is a historical house located in the Old Town San Diego. This house was not only a residence but a general store, execution site, courthouse, theatre- you can read up on the extensive history from their official website. About 35% of their visitors are non-locals visiting San Diego to go to many of the main tourist attractions. Many local San Diegoans go there as children on school field trips or with their day camp groups, so at least all the locals go there at one time in their lives. According to their site, the Whaley House is the number one haunted house according to the Travel Channel. This leads me to believe that there are strange paranormal happenings that do exist in that house. Talking with the docent patiently waiting for a question by a brave soul that would ask one- apparently, most things happen to children there. According to the docent,  “Children are most affected by the energy of the house and notice strange things more than adults while in the house.” Also, he noted that strange things have occurred first hand for him, he smelled perfume (not modern scented, but rose scented) and footsteps clacking upstairs before the house opened (no one else inside). This is contrary to the belief that the spirits come out at night, all of his occurrences happened before 10 am. He also has found puzzle pieces on the opposite side of the room from the night previous, like the puzzle was thrown during the night.  There are even pictures in the gallery there with blurs and lines to prove some cameras have captured spirits (pre-digital). The house is loaded with old style pictures, I would describe some as still-life, traditional paintings. Personally, I did feel a strangeness in the air while walking around but I do gather that maybe from my preconceived notion that this was a spirited house.
